Ghana’s former Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Ablema Afeku, has been officially introduced as the World Tourism Forum Institute (WTFI) Brand Ambassador for Africa. The appointment was presented at a ceremony in Accra, underscoring WTFI’s intention to elevate Africa’s tourism and investment narrative on global platforms.
An Accra ceremony focused on diplomacy and national value
According to reports, Afeku was formally unveiled by Richard Owusu, WTFI’s representative in Ghana, with Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, also in attendance. The event emphasized the idea that such international representation can strengthen national tourism priorities and broaden strategic partnerships.
The ceremony also carried a strong “national gain” message—framing the appointment as a step that can support Ghana’s and Africa’s broader tourism ambitions beyond partisan lines, with an emphasis on institutional cooperation to enable the role.
What WTFI says it aims to achieve
WTFI positions itself as a global platform working at the intersection of tourism, investment, and policy engagement—bringing together public and private sector stakeholders through forums, dialogues, and investment-oriented initiatives.
Afeku’s ambassadorial role is presented not only as symbolic representation, but as a mission-driven appointment aligned with priorities such as investment promotion, innovation, destination development, and tourism infrastructure growth across the continent.
A stronger voice for Africa’s tourism agenda

Coverage around the announcement highlights Afeku’s leadership background and experience in tourism governance, linking her selection to the goal of giving Africa a clearer, more influential voice in global tourism discussions—while improving investor confidence and expanding international collaboration.

This appointment is being framed as both a reputational milestone for Ghana and a strategic move for Africa—aimed at amplifying the continent’s tourism potential and accelerating investment-focused partnerships.
