The Sunyani Traditional Council (STC) in the Bono regional capital, has suspended the Queen mother of the Traditional area, Nana Akosua Asor Dua Brayie II, with immediate effect and barred her from engaging herself in any activity of the Traditional Council.
The announcement was made at a press conference held on Tuesday, 17th June, 2025 at the old chiefs place at Area 1, near the victoria park in Sunyani, after violent clashes and disturbances as a result of several controversies surrounding the installation of a new chief.
The Acting President of the traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio, while addressing the media indicated that, Nana Akosua Asor Dua Brayie II no longer serves in the capacity of the Queen mother of the Traditional Council.
The event drew hundreds of supporters, many of whom were dressed in black and red attire, sporting red armbands to signify their support for the council’s decision.
During the press conference, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio publicly announced the suspension of the Queen Mother. He emphasized that her recent actions, particularly bringing approximately ninety armed thugs to seize control of the Sunyani old palace, were unacceptable and had brought shame to the Boahen Korkor Royal Stool of Sunyani.
Below are the statements from Council Leaders.
Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio clarified, “Let it be unequivocally stated there is only one recognized chief in Sunyani Traditional Area – Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II.” He further denounced Osei Tutu, who was allegedly enstooled by the Queen Mother, labelling him an imposter.
According to Nana Kwaku Ababio, Osei Tutu was among seven royals presented by the Queen Mother to the King Makers of the Sunyani Traditional Council but was rejected due to his lack of understanding of Sunyani traditions, boundaries, and his own family history.
Allegations Against the Queen Mother
The Paramount Chief outlined several serious allegations against the Queen Mother:
Misuse of Council Letterhead
The Queen Mother allegedly used the Sunyani Traditional Council’s letterhead to sign consent letters for individuals, extorting money unlawfully from them. The Paramount Chief stressed that she is not a member of his council and her actions are illegal.
Unauthorized Sale of Stool Lands
Many stool lands were reportedly sold by her without council approval, utilizing the council’s letterhead for these transactions.
Mistreatment of Market Women
The Queen Mother has been accused of mistreating market women, forcing them to crawl on the ground as a form of punishment.
Disrespect Toward Divisional Chief
She has insulted the divisional chiefs, demonstrating a blatant lack of respect for her position and the traditional hierarchy.
Directives from the Council
Following these allegations, the Nananom of the Sunyani Traditional Council issued directives to local institutions, instructing them not to recognize or engage with the Queen Mother in any capacity. Media houses were also advised against interviewing her on any chieftaincy matters related to Sunyani.
Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II made it clear that the land of Sunyani belongs to him. He challenged anyone claiming to be a chief to appear publicly, stating, “Anyone who feels they have been declared a chief should dare be carried shoulder high or patrol the street for me to see.”
Traditional Rites
After the press conference, the Nananom and their supporters marched through the streets of Sunyani to Area Two, where they performed traditional rites at their family house, reinforcing their commitment to the traditions and leadership of the Sunyani Traditional Area.
