FREEDOM WAY is in the Cinemas – and it feels like a painting.

Lekan Afolabi’s Freedom Way is more than a film; it’s a layered portrait of modern Nigeria, exploring corruption, oppression, and dignity through a trio of interconnected stories set in Lagos.

After winning the Jury Prize at AFRIFF 2024 and being crowned Best Writing & Film at the AMVCA 2025, Freedom Way is cementing its place in Nigerian cinema history.

At Artdey, we couldn’t help but draw a connection between Afolabi’s storytelling and the work of many contemporary artists on our platform.

Just as Freedom Way uses stillness, space, and silence to highlight tension, our artists capture emotion in the unspoken:

  • Paintings that linger on a facial expression.

  • Textures that tell stories of Lagos traffic, heat, and hope.

  • Moments of quiet defiance, captured in brushstrokes or mixed media.

The film doesn’t scream. It simmers. And so does great art.

See Freedom Way while it’s still in theatres across Nigeria. This is a film best experienced in a dark room, on a big screen.

Then discover original artworks that mirror the emotional tone of Freedom Way.
