The whole of Lawra township in the Upper West region was thrown in shock, after 7 students of Lawra Senior High School tragically lost their lives when a canoe they were using to cross the Dikpe River capsized suddenly midstream. After more than 24 hours of joint search operations by local authorities and other government agencies such as The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), 7 bodies out of 10 have been successfully retrieved from the Dewo River, which is some few kilometers downstream of the Black Volta. The three remaining student fortunately swan out of the River safely.
The Ghana Education Service, through a letter, signed by Deputy Minister For Education and member of parliament for Builsa South, Hon. Clement Apaak, have extended their condolences to the bereaved families and have pledged to support them in this difficult moment
