The Royal keys to the Asante royal tomb ‘BREMAN BAANMU’

The Asante royal keys are a set of ancient master keys used to open every room in the “Aban,” a sacred carved stone palace that serves as the royal mausoleum at Breman, near Kumasi in Ghana. The keys are culturally significant artifacts, symbolizing centuries of tradition and royal heritage since 1822.

History and significance

  • Ancestral keys: The master keys are historic ancestral items that have been in use since at least 1822.
  • Built by Asantehene Mensa Bonsu: The Aban palace was constructed by the late Asantehene Mensa Bonsu, who reigned in the 19th century.
  • Custodianship: The keys are carefully preserved and kept by the Pinakohene, also known as the Obuabasa, who is the traditional key bearer for the royal household.
  • Used for burial rites: The keys are brought out for culturally significant events, such as royal funerals, including the recent burial of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
  • Symbol of power and security: In addition to their practical function, the keys symbolize the security of the palace and the immense power of the Asantehene and the royal family.

The late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III will also be buried at the same place as her ancestors.
