Bryan Acheampong declares intent to contest NPP Flagbearership

The former Minister for Food and Agriculture made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Monday, June 24. Seeking their prayers and support, Dr. Acheampong explained that as a devout member of the church, it was important to formally inform the leadership before going public.

“A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations,” he told journalists after the meeting. “But to do that, as a product of the church, it will be a disappointment per my tradition, if the moderator of the church hears it for the first time on the radio.”

Dr. Acheampong revealed that his decision follows feedback from an exploratory team that spent a month engaging NPP delegates across the country. According to him, the team’s findings pointed to a strong desire within the party for his brand of leadership, which he believes reflects the values and direction the NPP needs.

“So, before a formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to come and inform the moderator of the Presbyterian Church that this is what I have set out to do,” he added.

The leadership of the Presbyterian Church offered prayers for him during the engagement, committing him to God as he prepares for the political journey ahead.

Dr. Acheampong now joins Assin former Central MP, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, and former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, as individuals who have so far declared their interest in leading the NPP into the 2028 elections. Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 elections, is also widely seen as a potential contender.

The NPP has officially scheduled January 31, 2026, as the date for its next presidential primary, following recommendations from its constitutional review committee which were later adopted by the party’s National Council.

With the timeline now set, the race for the NPP flagbearer slot is gradually taking shape, promising an intense and competitive build-up ahead of the 2028 polls.
