Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has made a surprising revelation about his personal life, disclosing on social media that he has never purchased a mobile phone for himself throughout his career.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the rap icon shared the candid confession, noting that if he goes ahead to buy a mobile device now, it will mark the very first time in his life that he is spending his own money on a personal phone.
The “Country Side” hitmaker credited his inner circle, specifically his wife, Tracy Owusu Addo (Tracy Sarkcess), highlife and Afrobeats singer King Promise, and a few close friends for keeping him updated with modern devices over the years.
According to Sarkodie, his reluctance or habit of sticking with older devices often leaves his loved ones embarrassed by what he carries around. As a result, they routinely step in to upgrade his smartphones for him.
“I’ve never bought a phone for myself in my entire life,” the rapper shared on X, adding humorously that those around him usually get fed up with his outdated devices and end up gifting him new ones.
The post quickly ignited widespread reactions from fans and industry peers across social media, with many expressing amusement that one of Africa’s most successful and wealthy hip-hop artists relies entirely on gifts for his personal tech devices.
Known for his low-key lifestyle despite his immense commercial success, Sarkodie’s lighthearted confession reinforces his reputation among fans as an unbothered, practical superstar who leaves tech upgrades to those who care about them most.
Sarkodie is currently gearing up for one of the biggest concerts in the calendar year, The Rapperholic Concert, Kumasi edition on 24th October 2026 and also the road to the much anticipated 02 Arena concert in the UK in March 2027.
