Sarkodie calls for better values in western black diaspora following tragic death of 15-year-old Ghanaian boy in New York

Ghanaian hip-hop icon Sarkodie has expressed deep grief over the tragic death of 15-Year-old Ghanaian schoolboy Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot in the Bronx, New York.

Taking to social media on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the award-winning rapper offered heartfelt condolences to the teenager’s family while sparking a wider conversation on upbringing, community values, and safety in Western nations.

Tragic Incident in the Bronx

Javits Frimpong, who had relocated from Ghana to the United States just a year prior to join his father, was shot while on his way to DreamYard Preparatory School in New York. The news of his sudden death sent shockwaves through both the diaspora and the Ghanaian community back home.

A Call for Introspection on Upbringing

In a reflective statement posted on his X handle (formerly Twitter), Sarkodie highlighted the sharp cultural contrast in how violent crime is perceived in Ghana versus certain parts of the West.

“We might have our difficulties here in Africa, especially in Ghana, but one thing I will always pride myself on is how we were brought up as children, even in rough and tough neighbourhoods,” Sarkodie wrote.

“Murder is a big deal out here. It’s almost alien to us because whenever something like that happens, it becomes major news. We announce and discuss almost every single case in the media, and as a people, we are always shocked and saddened by it.”

The artist went on to express growing worry for the safety of African diaspora communities living abroad, questioning the social environments that foster youth violence:

“But it seems to have become an almost regular thing in some parts of the West, which makes it scary for my people to feel safe out there.”

“I honestly don’t know what kind of upbringing shapes children to become so evil. I think some of my fellow Black brothers and sisters out there need to do better when it comes to raising their children and instilling the right values in them.”

Condolences to the Family

Concluding his statement, the rapper paid tribute to young Javits and offered prayers for his surviving family members:

“It’s very unfortunate that we had to lose Javits this way. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Sending love, prayers and strength to the family, especially his mum and dad. My deepest condolences. ❤️“

Sarkodie’s comments have drawn widespread reaction across social media, echoing broader concerns within the West African community regarding gun violence in metropolitan areas of North America.
