Politician and businessman Kofi Wayo, reported dead

Charles Eric Kofi Wayo, the self-styled “Nima Boy” who moved through four political camps without ever winning office, died early on 7 November 2026 at Nyaho Clinic, Accra.

A death announcement that circulated on Saturday gave the time and place of death. It described him as a resident of East Legon and a constituent of the Ayawaso area. GhanaWeb and Ghanamma carried the report the same day. Neither gave a cause of death. No funeral arrangements had been announced and no family statement could be found by the time of publication.

He is not the National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth activist Prince Patrick Ankrah, known as “Kofi Wayo Central”. Ketu North MP Eric Edem Agbana announced that man’s death in November 2025.

Four camps, no seat

Wayo came back to Ghana after decades in the United States, where he went to Albany High School in Georgia. He became the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East in the 2000 elections and lost to the NDC’s Dr Mustapha Ahmed. His party still won the presidency.

The break came in October 2003. He told Joy FM that the NPP had failed ordinary Ghanaians and that he would either form his own party or join the People’s National Convention (PNC). NPP General Secretary Dan Botwe told the Daily Guide that Wayo was an ordinary member with no special position.

Inside the PNC, Wayo ran for the 2004 flagbearer slot and lost to Dr Edward Mahama. By October 2004 he was threatening to quit over Danny Ofori-Atta’s selection as Mahama’s running mate.

His next vehicle was the United Renaissance Party (URP). The Daily Guide reported that it was registered with the Electoral Commission on 13 June 2006. Two years later the paper could find only two URP offices in Accra, at Nima and Nungua. The party did not get its leader onto the 2008 presidential ballot, so Wayo campaigned for the NDC instead.

A seat on the energy board

The NDC’s victory brought him his only public role. On 18 June 2009, President John Evans Atta Mills named him to the Energy Commission board under Professor Abeiku Hammond. Before he had even attended a board meeting, Wayo went on Citi FM and said he would resign if the commission was not run properly.

In May 2015 he told Rainbow Radio that he had stepped down from the board voluntarily.

From platforms to farms

On 11 March 2017, Graphic Online reported that Wayo had quit  politicsto farm. He said he was helping village farmers with tools and logistics, “unlike their MPs who are cruising in landcruisers and don’t care about them”.

He said he handed out exercise books and cutlasses in rural communities. He also called on the government to make healthcare easier for farmers to reach, and he accused both the NPP and the NDC of putting their own enrichment ahead of the voters who elected them.

After that he mostly disappeared from view. The Ghana Report, The Herald and GhanaWeb all ran pieces between 2023 and December 2025 asking where he was.

On 4 March 2026, Ibrahim Zakaria, who described himself as a close associate, raised concerns about Wayo’s well-being on Kofi Adoma Nwanwani’s Kofi TV channel. He said he had gone to the politician’s home the day before with broadcaster Blakk Rasta.

Besides his political career, Wayo raised the musician Emmanuel Wayo after the boy’s father died. Followers of NewsGhana’s political coveragewill remember Emmanuel Wayo telling interviewers in 2012 that his guardian would be president one day. Wayo’s last public cause was rural farming, which he linked to the record of Ghana’s agriculture ministers
