Cristiano Ronaldo has brought a stormy end to his iconic international career, rejecting an offer from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for a formal farewell match after a high-profile fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old superstar formally announced his international retirement on Thursday, drawing the curtain on a legendary 23-year tenure with the Seleção. His departure follows weeks of internal friction stemming from Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Norway on September 27, where Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute. Displeased with his lack of playing time despite a prior agreement, the veteran forward left the national team camp without permission, triggering an FPF disciplinary investigation that resulted in a 30-day suspension and fine.
The FPF had hoped to organize a grand testimonial match to honor the country’s greatest-ever player, but Ronaldo declined the offer. Speaking on the situation, head coach Jorge Jesus maintained that his selection decisions were made purely in the interest of the squad, noting he was unaware of Ronaldo’s retirement decision until it was announced publicly.
Ronaldo leaves international football as the all-time leading scorer in men’s international history, amassing 146 goals across a record 234 appearances. Since making his senior debut in August 2003, he captained Portugal to its crowning achievements—winning UEFA Euro 2016 and the inaugural 2019 UEFA Nations League title.
While his time in the red and green jersey has concluded, Ronaldo will continue his club career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, where his contract runs through June 2027.
