IShowSpeed joins Barack and Michelle Obama to release Ghana Independence Documentary ‘The Eyes of Ghana‘

In an unexpected fusion of internet culture, Hollywood filmmaking, and presidential diplomacy, digital streaming icon IShowSpeed has partnered with former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to executive produce a feature-length documentary on the life of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the birth of modern Ghana.

Titled The Eyes of Ghana, the film is directed by two-time Academy Award-winning director Ben Proudfoot. The documentary offers an intimate chronicle of West Africa’s anti-colonial movement, focusing specifically on 94-year-old cinematographer Reverend Dr. Christian Tsui Hesse, who served as the official personal cameraman to Dr. Nkrumah during his presidency.

The project was brought to global prominence after IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., unveiled the official trailer to millions of viewers during a live broadcast, sharing his personal passion for the film’s historic message.

Preserving the Lens of Independence

At the heart of the documentary lies Hesse’s race against time and failing eyesight to rescue, restore, and digitize over a thousand canisters of rare archival film reels. Following the 1966 military coup that ousted Nkrumah, much of the visual record documenting the founding of Africa’s first independent post-colonial nation was buried, forgotten, or left to deteriorate in humid storage conditions.

The Eyes of Ghana follows Hesse alongside Ghanaian filmmaker and archivist Anita Afonu as they work tirelessly to safeguard the physical reels—shot largely on 35mm and IMAX 65mm formats—culminating in a public screening at Accra’s landmark Rex Cinema.

The film relies heavily on Hesse’s original footage, providing viewers with high-definition, unseen perspectives of Nkrumah’s iconic speeches, diplomatic summits, and the everyday fervor of the pan-African liberation movement in the 1950s and 1960s. The soundtrack features an original score composed by Oscar winner Kris Bowers, recorded at Abbey Road Studios alongside the Chineke! Orchestra and traditional Ghanaian master drummers.

An Unlikely Powerhouse Partnership

The collaboration between Higher Ground Productions—the Obamas’ media company—Breakwater Studios, and IShowSpeed represents a groundbreaking approach to historical storytelling. While Higher Ground brings substantial prestige and executive distribution experience, Speed’s involvement aims to directly introduce the legacy of African independence to Gen-Z digital audiences.

Watkins joined the project following his widely publicized tour of Ghana, during which he spent time exploring local culture and connecting with young West Africans. Speaking during his livestream reveal, the 21-year-old content creator emphasized the profound personal impact the story had on him.

“When I visited Ghana, it felt like home,” Watkins told his audience. “Chris Hesse stood behind the lens and captured the moment an entire continent took its destiny back into its own hands. His determination to save those images ensures that my generation can see that history in its pure, raw form. I’m honored to stand with President Obama and Michelle Obama to help bring this story to the world.”

Ethan Lewis, Head of Non-Fiction at Higher Ground Productions, noted that the film highlights “the transcendent power of cinematic archival work in keeping collective national memory alive”.

Theatrical Release and International Distribution

The Eyes of Ghana is slated for a special nationwide theatrical release in select U.S. and Canadian cinemas on October 28. Subsequent screenings across Ghana, the United Kingdom, and the broader global premiere circuit are set to be announced in the coming weeks.

As the historic reels prepare for their big-screen debut, Hesse’s message to younger generations remains simple: to keep recording and safeguarding the truth of their own narratives.
