Rapper and designer Kanye West reportedly made an unannounced four-day stay at an off-market, $295 million oceanfront estate in Malibu, establishing a temporary workspace poolside to experience living in a residence designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
The revelation emerges from details outlined in journalist Jonathan Van Meter’s book Citizen Kim, which recounts how West circumvented standard real estate protocol. Rather than scheduling a private showing through listing agents, West drove directly up to the gates of the 42,000-square-foot concrete compound—then owned by William and Maria Bell—and rang the security buzzer. When the homeowner hesitated to grant access to the unannounced visitor, West made an unconventional pitch, asking, “If Elvis Presley came to your door and rang your buzzer, would you let him in? This is that”.
The pitch proved effective, leading to an impromptu visit that quickly extended far beyond a standard walkthrough. West moved in for four days, setting up a working “office” space near the pool deck and hosting business meetings directly on the property to gauge “the vibe of working in an Ando”.
The episode highlights West’s persistent fascination with Tadao Ando’s brutalist concrete architecture. West later acquired his own Ando-designed Malibu beach house in 2021 for $57.3 million, which he famously gutted during an abandoned renovation project before listing it at a significant loss.
The $295 million off-market listing where West crashed was eventually sold in 2023 to Jay-Z and Beyoncé for $200 million, setting an all-time price record for California residential real estate.
