The South Side of Chicago paid tribute to one of its most influential educators. A stretch of 78th Street in the city’s South Shore neighborhood was honorarily renamed “Dr. Donda West Way,” celebrating the life, academic leadership, and community legacy of the late scholar and mother of music icon Ye (formerly Kanye West).
Ye was in attendance at the corner of 78th Street and South Shore Drive for the unveiling ceremony. Wearing dark sunglasses and keeping a quiet profile, he looked on and clapped as local officials and community members revealed the red-and-white road sign honoring his mother.
Dr. Donda West, who passed away in 2007 at age 58, was far more than the mother of a global superstar. She spent nearly three decades at Chicago State University, where she chaired the Department of English, Speech, and Theater and helped found the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.
The effort to rename the street was spearheaded by Dr. Garrard McClendon, a writer and professor at Chicago State University who nominated Dr. West for her “transformative” impact on students and the institution.
“This stands as a chance to pay tribute to a woman whose impact stretches far beyond the block, far beyond Chicago, and far beyond her lifetime,” said Alderman Greg Mitchell of Chicago’s 7th Ward, who addressed the crowd during the proceedings. Mitchell praised Dr. West as an educator who shaped minds, opened doors, and left an indelible footprint across the South Shore community.
For Ye, who was raised by Dr. West in Chicago after moving from Atlanta as a child, the event marked a deeply personal homecoming. Throughout his career, Ye has cited his mother as his chief inspiration and guiding force, dedicating his critically acclaimed 10th studio album, Donda (2021), as well as various creative endeavors to her memory.
The newly designated Dr. Donda West Way stands near the neighborhood where she lived and raised her son, ensuring her contributions as an educator, author, and mentor remain permanently woven into the landscape of Chicago’s South Side.
