Grammy-winning R&B singer Chris Brown avoided prison time on Monday after a judge at Southwark Crown Court sentenced him to an eight-month suspended prison term for his role in a 2023 nightclub attack according to judgement sighted by kmjofficial.com.
The 37-year-old artist was sentenced to eight months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty in July to a charge of affray. Under the terms of the suspended sentence, Brown will not serve jail time provided he adheres to court conditions and avoids further legal infractions during the one-year period.
The Incident and Court Findings
The charges stemmed from a February 2023 brawl at Tape, a private nightclub located in London’s Mayfair district. Video footage played during court proceedings showed Brown initiating the physical altercation by striking music producer Abraham Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle.
Prosecutors stated that the incident lasted roughly 20 seconds. The footage captured Brown continuing to attack Diaw as he turned away before co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu grabbed the victim. Brown then threw additional punches before being restrained and pulled away. Diaw was subsequently treated at a hospital for head and knee injuries.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe noted that Brown played a “leading role” in the assault, emphasizing that footage showed him moving first. In exchange for Brown guilty plea to affray, prosecutors dropped additional charges including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon.
The Ruling and Defense Arguments
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as “plainly dangerous,” highlighting the serious risk posed by using a glass bottle directed at someone’s head. However, the judge ruled that a custodial sentence was not required due to mitigating factors, including Brown’s early guilty plea, stable employment, charity work, and a clean record in recent years.
Defence counsel Sallie Bennett-Jenkins characterized the brawl as an “ugly and unattractive incident” and stated that Brown offered a profound apology to everyone present at the venue that night.
Co-defendant Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received a four-month suspended sentence.
Background
Brown was arrested in connection with the attack in May 2025 at a hotel in Manchester, England, after arriving via private jet for a concert. He was subsequently granted bail of £5 million ($6.7 million), allowing him to travel and tour internationally while court proceedings were ongoing.
