Cultural and artistic meanings behind the Black Stars’ 2026 Fifa World Cup jerseys

The Black Stars’ new jerseys for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, produced by PUMA, were unveiled in New York City on March 19, 2026.

The home jersey (Yellow)

(1) It features a rich gold base with patterns inspired by Kente, one of Ghana’s most recognised cultural assets.

(2) Different shades of yellow add depth to the design, giving it a strong fashion appeal while maintaining its identity as a football jersey.

(3) The shirt also carries important cultural references. Its gold colour recalls Ghana’s history as the Gold Coast, while the Kente-inspired patterns honour the country’s textile heritage.

(4) Adinkra-inspired motifs further enrich the design, representing values such as wisdom, unity, strength and identity.

The away jersey (White)

(1) According to PUMA, this shirt is built around ideas of movement, rhythm and national pride. Its modern athletic shape is enhanced by flowing graphic elements that create a sense of energy.

(2) The Black Star is placed prominently at the centre, making it the focal point of the design, while the white background allows the colours to stand out without looking crowded.

(3) A pronounced feature of the jersey is the spider web, connected to Kwaku Ananse, the legendary spider from Ghanaian folklore. The web-like patterns symbolise storytelling, wisdom and creativity.

(4) The red, gold and green details reflect the colours of Ghana’s flag.
