Prison psychologist jailed for 28 months over secret affair with convicted killer

A 32-year-old prison psychologist, Dr. Amber-Renee Gayle, has been sentenced to 28 months in prison after being exposed for a secret sexual affair with a convicted killer serving a life sentence at HMP Swinfen Hall in Staffordshire.

The sentencing, handed down at Stafford Crown Court following a guilty plea to misconduct in public office, revealed a web of compromised security, illicit communications, and contraband smuggling that took place inside the young offenders institute. Beyond the illicit relationship, investigators discovered that Gayle used her trusted position as a senior clinical practitioner to bring unauthorized items into the facility, including mobile phones and SIM cards smuggled into the prison concealed inside hollowed-out tins of baked beans, while knowingly enabling the prisoner to retain prohibited recording equipment on site and failing to report multiple security protocol violations.

Therapy Room Encounters and Unauthorised Items

According to court filings and prosecutors, Gayle exchanged thousands of text and social media messages with 24-year-old inmate Rickcarlo Williams between May and November 2024. Williams is currently serving a life sentence for a fatal 2021 machete attack in London.

The court heard that Gayle routinely allowed Williams to record their sexual encounters on a mobile phone inside a private prison therapy room designated for one-on-one psychological counseling.

Internal Red Flags Ignored

The illicit affair unfolded despite early warnings. Court disclosures revealed that when Gayle first began assessing Williams in August 2023, the inmate made inappropriate sexual advances toward her. Although Gayle initially reported the advance to her line manager, she subsequently entered into a prolonged physical relationship with Williams months later.

Addressing the court, sentencing judges highlighted the severe breach of trust and risk posed to institutional safety, noting that correctional officers and specialist staff who abuse professional privileges severely undermine the integrity of the justice system.

In addition to her 28-month custodial sentence, Gayle faces permanent revocation of her professional psychology license and inclusion on relevant offenders registries.
