Ghanaian-British rapper Derek Andrew Safo, known by his stage name Sway Dasafo who died at age 44 is said to have been battling with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that starts in the lymphatic system since 2010.
Prior to his death, the musician is believed to have been bed-bound and wheelchair-dependent.
Sway disclosed his health battle in a video shared in June 2026 that he was recovering and getting back on his feet after a period of being bed-bound and wheelchair-dependent.
Though he did not clearly mention the severe medical condition he suffered, he was already known for the Hodgkin Lymphoma which he was diagnosed with in 2010, leading him to embark on chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The death of Sway was officially announced by the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award – an annual award event for Black British musicians on its social media.
”We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sway,” part of the statement read.
MOBO said the British-Ghanaian rapper would forever remain in the history of the awards scheme.
A close friend of Sway in an account allegedly stated that the rapper died in his house in Ghana.
He began his career with the group Phynix Crew before becoming a solo artist.
It was his solo career that brought him success in the industry with the track “Intoxicated” which had renowned producer and artist manager Richie Mensah on, gaining prominence in the industry.
Sway released five solo albums and two EPs in his career and was also best known for the 2006 single “Little Derek” which became the NO. 30 track on the U.K. Singles Chart that year.
He had multiple collaborations with renowned artists like Ed Sheeren, Riz Ahmed and American rappers Lupe Fiasco and Chamillionaire, among others.
Sway Dasafo left behind his wife Helen who he married in 2013 and four children: Jalil, AJ, Inaya and Imara.
