Tyler Perry Rules Out Marriage: Why the Entertainment Mogul is Choosing to Pass on the Aisle

Despite spending decades creating cinematic stories about romance, dynamic relationships, and marital resilience; most notably through his beloved Why Did I Get Married? franchise, Tyler Perry has made his own definitive stance on the subject clear. During an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the 57-year-old billionaire filmmaker opened up about why he has no plans to ever tie the knot.

When asked directly by host Jennifer Hudson if he ever intended to marry, Perry offered a swift, single-word answer: “Nope.”

Pragmatism Over Romance

Perry clarified that his resistance isn’t a rejection of love or partnership, but rather a reflection of the legal and financial practicalities attached to divorce. Pointing to what he described as a widespread “divorce pandemic,” the creator candidly shared how witnessing the financial ruin of peers shaped his worldview.

“It’s not the marriage that bothers me, it’s the divorce,” Perry told Hudson. “Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce. So I’m good just being free.”

Having built a self-made media empire valued at $1.4 billion—rising from homelessness in his twenties to owning a massive 330-acre studio lot in Atlanta—Perry’s perspective is rooted in protecting the autonomy and equity he fought decades to secure.

A Shift in Priorities

Perry was previously in a long-term, 11-year relationship with model and activist Gelila Bekele, with whom he shares his son, Aman. While the two split in 2020, they have continued to co-parent amicably.

As he gets older, Perry explained that his focus has naturally shifted away from conventional milestones and toward peace of mind, family, and slowing down. He noted plans to step back slightly from his intense Hollywood production schedule to spend more quality time with his son.

For a Hollywood figure who built his career writing complex relationship dynamics, Perry’s decision highlights a growing sentiment among high-net-worth individuals: prioritizing financial preservation and personal freedom over traditional legal contracts, while still keeping space for love on his own terms.
