Sarkodie’s ‘Messiah’ saved my music career after my father’s death – Kweku Flick

Ghanaian rapper Kweku Flick has credited hip-hop icon Sarkodie for keeping his music career alive, revealing that a timely feature on the track Messiah stopped him from quitting the music industry following his father’s death.

Speaking on his recent emotional struggles, the high-life and hip-hop star shared that the passing of his father in August 2024 left him in a dark place, prompting him to seriously consider walking away from his recording career.

Desperate for direction, Kweku Flick recalled turning to prayer during his period of mourning. “After everything that happened, I went on my knees and prayed to God that if He really wanted me to do music, He should show me a sign,” he recounted.

That sign arrived three months later, in November 2024, when Sarkodie sent him an unreleased draft of Messiah. The track had two open verses from Sarkodie but lacked a hook.

“Immediately I listened to the song, I told myself that this is my type,” Kweku Flick stated. “I was driving in a car playing it, and at that moment, I got the idea and the lyrics to write a chorus that suited his delivery.”

Interpretation of the gesture as a divine signal proved career-defining. The artist admitted that without Sarkodie’s unexpected outreach and the massive visibility provided by his platform—including performing on the Rapperholic stage—he would have quit recording entirely to focus solely on his commercial sachet water enterprise.

“I feel like that particular song changed a lot,” Flick reflected. “If not for Messiah, I would have logged out of music completely.”
